Reliable Solar Power After Repeated Phase Failures and Overloads

At Mama Ngina Drive Waterfront, near Sea View Plaza in Mombasa, Bills On Solar EA Limited successfully upgraded and stabilised a residential solar power system that had experienced repeated phase failures, overloads and inverter shutdowns.

The existing installation had four 5kW Deye inverters operating within a system consisting of 23.31kWp of Longi 555W solar panels and approximately 40kWh of Weco 5K3 lithium-ion battery storage.

Rather than continuing to operate multiple smaller inverters, our team redesigned the inverter configuration and replaced the four 5kW units with one 20kW three-phase Deye LV hybrid inverter.

The objective was to improve system synchronisation, three-phase power management and overall reliability while providing a more suitable platform for the property's electrical loads.

System Configuration

The upgraded system consists of:

  • 23.31kWp Solar PV

  • Longi 555W solar panels

  • 1 × 20kW Deye LV three-phase hybrid inverter

  • 40kWh Weco 5K3 lithium-ion battery storage

  • Three-phase power distribution and synchronisation

  • Residential backup and solar energy management

Solving Repeated Phase Failures and Overloads

The property had experienced recurring phase failures and electrical overloads, resulting in repeated inverter trips and system failures.

These types of problems demonstrate an important aspect of solar installation: the quality of the system design is just as important as the quality of the equipment installed.

A solar system should be designed around the property's:

  • Maximum demand

  • Phase loading

  • Existing electrical distribution

  • Solar PV capacity

  • Battery capacity

  • Inverter capacity

  • Starting currents of high-power appliances

  • Future electricity demand

  • Available space for system expansion

By moving from four 5kW inverters to a 20kW three-phase Deye LV inverter, the system was reconfigured around a centralised three-phase inverter architecture better suited to the property's requirements.

Why Proper Solar System Design Matters

Many solar system problems do not necessarily originate from the solar panels or batteries. They can result from incorrect system sizing, poor phase balancing, inadequate protection, unsuitable inverter configuration or insufficient consideration of future loads.

At Bills On Solar, we therefore consider the complete electrical system before recommending an installation or upgrade.

Our solar system design process can include:

Load assessment → Electrical inspection → Phase analysis → Solar PV sizing → Inverter selection → Battery sizing → Protection design → System synchronisation → Commissioning → Monitoring

This approach helps create a system that is not only capable of operating today but can also accommodate changing energy requirements.

Designing for Future Expansion

One of the most important considerations when installing a solar system is expansion capacity.

A property may begin with a certain electricity demand but later add:

  • Air conditioners

  • Electric water heaters

  • Swimming-pool pumps

  • Borehole pumps

  • Electric cooking equipment

  • EV chargers

  • Additional buildings

  • Home offices and ICT equipment

  • Additional battery storage

A system designed without expansion in mind can eventually become undersized, leading to unnecessary equipment replacement.

For this reason, Bills On Solar recommends considering future load growth and expansion requirements during the initial design stage.
